1749 the Austrians return. In 1781, emperor Joseph II decides to demolish the fortifications as they are too heavy a burden to shoulder. Then follows the confused period of the Belgian and French revolutions. In 1791, the Austrians reconstruct the outworks in earth. After a siege of two weeks in 1794, Ypres becomes French.
