VILLE DE BRUGES

On the Bruges’ rampart we can find one of the four remaining medieval gates of city: Gentpoort. This gate had probably the most important strategic location of all the city's gates . (route to the city of Ghent) Together with other historical top locations, this gate is part of a concept called the Historical Museums of Bruges (Bruggemuseum). The restored Gentpoort  is  converted into the interpretive centre. It is an information centre, where the visitor can find information about the ramparts as defending wall during time and a console will be placed where info is shared of the other Walls and Gardens projects. The Gentpoort is also starting point for walking and cycling track on the Bruges’ rampart.

The Minnewaterpark (West of the Gentpoort) is a magnificent green space in Bruges’s city centre. It borders on the Katelijnevest and offers a direct entrance to the historic and tourist centre. The nearby Kanaaleiland was especially designed to welcome (bus) tourists. As a result, the central footpath through the park has become even more important. One of the side entrances to the park will be renovated in 2013. There will be an extra pedestrian entrance to the park and a sitting zone with a playground apparatus for children.

A little further on, on the foot of the Katelijnevest, the border tiles were repaired in 2011. Over a total length of 200 meters, bluestone curbs were reused and piled up again to reach a maximum height of 60 cm. The retaining wall holds back the lawn on the border of the Katelijnevest.

On the foot of the Poertoren, about three meters below ground level at Begijnenvest stood the lockhouse, built during the second half of the 18th century. This building was used as a shelter or workplace for the operator of the Keizerinnenstuw (dam). In the beginning of the 20th century, the house was extended to create a dwelling in the traditional style of Bruges. Occupied until the 1970s – 1980s, with a picturesque vegetable garden next to the rampart at Begijnenvest, the house stood empty for about a quarter of a century. It was in very poor shape. As a reuse as a dwelling in an area that is regularly flooded would not be justified, it was decided to demolish the building and to integrate the garden in the park area on the ramparts.

The parcel (lock house with garden) has a total surface of about 1510 m². Until around 1980, the garden was intensively used as a vegetable garden. As such, it was a picturesque and attractive reference point on the ramparts. Before 2009 the garden was hardly noticeable or interesting for walkers or passers-by. The garden could only be reached through a small gate and a steep stone 17 steps against the west side of the Poertoren. Because of the lack of repair and the spontaneous decline, the garden was not accessible.

Thanks to the Walls and Gardens project, a garden was recreated and opened to everyone.
